The Truth About Hair Loss

Listen in to part of the show at: www2.oprah.com/xm/moz/200708/moz_20070810.jhtml

According to The Washington Post, Americans spend approximately $3.5 billion on products and services to combat hair loss, and the majority of those products don't even work. Dr. Oz talks with Spencer Kobren, president and founder of the American Hair Loss Association, about scams and real solutions.

A hormone known as DHT, which basically strangles the hair follicle, causes baldness in both men and women. Sensitivity to this hormone makes you genetically predisposed to balding. While two-thirds of all men suffer some degree of hair loss by age 35, Spencer says the sooner they start an intervention, the more likely they will be to regrow their hair.

According to Spencer, the most successful drugs for combating baldness are Propecia and minoxidil. He says that nearly 90 percent of men who use Propecia will stop the progression of hair loss, and about 60 percent will regrow their hair. The results from minoxidil are not as impressive, with only about 30 percent of users regrowing hair. Spencer does caution that if you've been balding for a while with significant hair loss, even the best medication won't help you re-grow much hair.

About 40 percent of hair loss sufferers are women, Spencer says, and they have even fewer options available to them. Because some drugs, including Propecia, can cause a specific birth defect, women intending to have children cannot take them. If a woman is suffering from severe pattern baldness, Spencer recommends working with a team of doctors, including a hormone specialist, to determine if something other than genetic pattern baldness is the cause.

Spencer warns people against choosing a hair transplant surgeon based on advertising alone. Hair transplantation can be a wonderful option for the right candidate if they choose the right doctor, he says, but extensive research should be done before making final decisions about a surgeon. While hair transplantation can be a viable option, the American Hair Loss Association recommends fewer than 50 surgeons worldwide. Spencer also cautions against buying any product that is not FDA-approved or does not carry an American Hair Loss Association symbol.

My Hair

Check out her site: www.bluestemstudio.biz

Robin created some very nice jewelry. She wants to donate some of the proceeds to help women with hair loss. I think that is so great. She sent out a ping to all of us on the Women Hairloss Project asking for a short story or poem. She inspired me to write something short. Here is what came to me. I sent a different one similar to this one to Robin. I am not sure if it
is what she is looking for -but it came to me in my heart.
*
* My hair...* *

I had you once......did I not appreciate you....
I miss you and begging you not to leave..

I lay in bed thinking of how it use to be..
me and you were great together....

I loved touching you and curling you between my fingers...
It wasn't too long ago that I was able to brush you... with out a worry..
now I am afraid that every time I do touch you... that you will eventually fade.

Please don't go - stay a while longer...please

*My Hair*

My hair was real.
My hair was me.
My hair is thinning.

How could this be?

I really need you now!

Why do you go?

Please stay... with me.
Please ..please..don't go!

Scalp Massage

Scalp Massage = More Hope!!

Found info on WikiPedia for help with hair loss.

Scalp Massage stimulates blood flow, which in turn helps feed the hair follicles. Nourishment is sent to the capillary vessels in hair papillae to activate the hair cells. Often it helps to prevent and fight avoidable hair loss, and reestablish the natural development of healthy hair.

A randomized clinical trial of patients with bald patches on their scalp or skin showed a daily scalp massage with essential oils ( Tea Tree Oil, Peppermint) to be a safe and effective treatment for hair loss resulting from alopecia areata, a condition in which damage to hair follicles is caused by the patient's own immune system. More info can be found here on Wiki Pedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldness_treatments.

Some of the few of my favorite things.........

*Neti Pot-
Help for the nose with nasal congestion and helps with allergy relief. The Neti Pot. My husband has been using it for over an year and was able to get off ...yes all...of his allergy medicine. I think my step mother first mentioned it to us for his allergies and after he paid a lot of money on meds and doctor bills he decided to then try it. Guess what- this worked more effectively. So, since I have been having a head cold this weekend I decided to pull out my Neti Pot. ( I learned that you should not share a Neti pot because of personal bacteria etc etc). Anyways- I rarely use it since I do not have allergies. I didn't want to because at first there is a discomfort. So, since I was soooo annoyed about the nasal plug up I tried it and after three attempts.. it worked. I was not able to breath through my nose at all. I did once on Friday night, twice yesterday and today I am feeling sooooo much better. It helped clear out the mucus and relieve pressure. Thank goodness. So my friends try this instead of a nasal spray and see the results. Oh and yes Dr. OZ from the Oprah show also backs this one up as well. I just love his validations and ideas! One more thing from mother nature that REALLY DOES WORK!

*Basically you pour water with a little salt in one nasal and tip your head and it pours out the other and clear this nasal passage way. All while your head is over a sink and you are breathing from your mouth. ;o)

*The wonders of Turmeric
So here it is, a secret that my husband came across. It is not really a secret but I never knew about it and it has prove to help clear up several different kinds of outbreaks.

If you have a swollen sore acne, boil etc it may work for you. (My husband would get saddle sores from bike riding in long 100-200 mile bike rides). He did massive research and checked with several doctors to see if he could get relief form these saddle sores. Nothing worked until he came across Turmeric. He cleared up in 3 days and didn't need to go back to the doc to get his saddle sore drained. (I know too much info.). I decided to try it when I had an acne outbreak on my face. Guess what- ---my face cleared up in a couple of days. I only take it when I have an out break two pills in the am and one at night. (Depends on each person how much to take- try different amounts and see what works for you). remember I am not a doctor but willing to share what has worked for us and my sister and she is a nurse.

I later saw an Oprah show where Dr. Oz said, take all the Turmeric you want, he didn't go into details on the wonders of it but said that it was great to take. I have seen why. Feel free to try it and let me know if it worked for you. We have the brand" Oregon Wild Harvest " this Turmeric brand seems to work great for us and each pilll has 453 mg each. This one also has black pepper in it but I am sure there are many of them out there with and with out other ingredients. My twin started to take it for her acne (acne helper) and had some really good results with it as well. Oh, it also is a spice that you can add on to food. I think most people know it as that.

*Mood Enhancers-
Get out and exercise!! What I like. Riding my bike (outside- up hills and some distance), yoga, something!

* Love endorphins -Get Hugs give Hugs and Love!! Releases good for you endorphins ! Can't buy that!

* Give your mind a work out!
Last but not least...read .... read ... read and then read some more. Expand your mind, go on a mental journey. etc etc.

Meditation and Healing by Kelly Howell (www.theatreofthemind)

I wanted to share what helps me and has helped me through stress, dealing with the loss of my mom, grandma and other stress in my life.

My mother in law is a social worker and is an incredible person helping people with many challenges. She has been helping me move from one consciousness to another and develop new insights. She referred me to some great books and to Kelly Howell. I love listening to Kelly's free podcast and her cd's. Very magical and healing.

*Kelly Howell (www.theatreofthemind) has some (free) good pod casts and stress release music ( music downloads are pretty inexpensive). I love Sound healing and she has a meditation one called "GUIDED MEDITATION". If you have an IPod or mp3 player listen with head phones and you will soon be in a state of relaxation and it feels really good. I have several of her cd's. I love the running meditation one, sounds sleep, guided meditation, scared ground. Love it..Love it.

A little about Kelly: Kelly is internationally acclaimed for her pioneering work in healing and mind expansion. With over 2 million audios in print, she's been actively involved in consciousness research for more than two decades, and is recognized as a thought-leader in the field of personal transformation.

Hair Scams- They are out there...Beware!

Hair Scams! Thought this would be good to post.

Good info for those seeking more help for hair loss. Just please research all possible ways before you decide to do something. People are vulnerable and get scammed. I was a victim by Hair Club EXT program. They lied, were rude, and didn't do what they promised. New staff, pulled on my hair when they styled and had no experience or limited with the laser.

I was looking at Farrell hair system a few months back for future options. The research I did mentioned with this system that you had to shave your head. Their website looks like very promising and a good plan but the more research I did and my husband did made us skeptical. We found many unhappy customers. I am sure there are happy ones but since I felt scammed by Hair Club for men/ women with their EXT program. I wanted to learn more after spending $1,800.00 on a useless (for me anyway treatment and ignorant rude staff that promised to refund me but wouldn't and were rude about it).

http://www.farrellhair.com/

Just to give you all the info I had. I did a Google search on Farrell hair and came up with many unhappy customers. Perhaps this is just a select few.

Check out http://www.ripoffreport.com - It is for consumers by consumers. You can enter a company name and see if there have been issues.

Farrell hair came up a few times so did Hair Club. I didn't see much under Reprieve.
